Leaving the Exumas

Good morning crew! We just weighed anchor off a small island on the SW side of Great Exuma Island, which had a fabulous little beach with the softest, whitest sands. We arrived there yesterday, 13 Nov about an hour before sunset, which is preferred to showing up at an unknown anchorage in the dark. We loaded Gyspy in the dingy, which we tow behind us in shallow calm seas, and gave her a 30 minute zoomie call and a šŸ’©.

She has really become a water dog and has decided itā€˜s ok jumping off the bow of the dingy a bit early. We’ll need to curtail this a bit but we are so happy she’s loving it. Makes us happy to see her so happy.

I was a bit aggressive in my decision to anchor more closely to the island in shallower water than my normal comfort range of no less than 10ft, Moonfleet drafts 5ft. I called ā€œlet go the anchor at 8.2 ft a couple hundred yards off the beach accounting for a 2ft tidal drop to 6ft. Tidal range in the Bahamas is variable place to place and not every location has a reporting station so there is a bit of estimating. By the time we were done at the beach it was evident we’d be really close to the bottom at low tide and we prudently opted to weigh anchor and move to deeper water. we would have likely been fine but as my Admiral says, ā€œyou’ll sleep like sh&t and wake me up!ā€ and she’s right. A good nights sleep is gold out here, well anywhere actually but the more secure we make the boat the better we all are. Lesson learned.

We are now enroute to Cape Verde, the Southern tip of Long Island, thus we are leaving the Exumas behind. The Exumas are simply breath taking, in the uniquely Bahamian limestone, scrub brush way with the most pristine waters and seemingly endless uninhabited islands. Cape Verde has a nice little anchorage, according to Active Captain reviews, on the West point where we may wait for calmer seas for the open ocean crossing to Crooked and Acklins Island. There is supposedly a cute beach bar right at the anchorage…. Hmmm Peanut Coladas?

This is our 14th day of the Adventure and despite a few yucky toilet issues and finicky electronics all is as it should be. Kirsten still likes me (whew) abd Gypsy has bonafide sea legs. What more could a Cap’n ask for?

Thanks for following!
